Metropolis and Modernism

Metropolis is a font designed by Josip Kelava. I came across this font when redesigning the book cover for The Great Gatsby. The style fits perfectly with that era whilst also having a bold minimalist design which fits in perfectly with the modern day.
Metropolis comes from the the industrial movement of the 1920′s where skyscrapers where born. “Using a double line technique, I wanted to create my own Art Deco style font that represented this era. The result is a bold, bumptious typeface with a stolidly calm disposition.”
This typeface is heavily influenced by Modernism which started are 1890-1910. Modernism was influenced by cultural trends, the movement experiments with form particularity drawing attention to material and the process of work. The artist actually shows his process of making the typeface on the webpage whether intentionally echoing the modernist style even more or not (see below).
