Avant-Garde, style is angular. 1974 typeface refers to 1920s era.
Claude Henri de Saint-Simon - first use of avant-garde/van garde. 1825 - community with big ideas on politics and science.

Avant-garde is a military metaphor, applied to art it refers to social and political struggle.
Reason rather than religion or emotion gives you truth - 1650 - 1790 - age of enlightenment
