I made this Taylor Swift drawing on Illustrator using the pen tool.
To draw a line with the pen tool you click where you want your line to start and finish. After you create the line you see handles which you can drag in order to create a curved line, depending on the angle of the handle is placed the line will become more curved.

For the block colour you simply have to draw the shape you want and click on the solid square in the control panel (example bottom left image). The top square is for solid colour and the bottom one is for lines; to give these shapes a nice smooth edge you can remove the line and just have it with a solid block colour.
Each feature and colour can be manipulated easier when on different layers. This is so you can find whatever you are looking for quickly without looking through a long list of strokes.
To create the look of an artistic brush with the pen tool you can go into Brushes>Brush Libraries Menu>Artistic there are many choices other than Artistic it depends on purpose but I mostly use Artistic Brushes.
